Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Essa

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a knightly horror novelettewritten by Robert Louis Stevenson in the Victorian era. The novellafollows a well-respected doctor - Henry Jekyll - and his strugglebetween good and evil when he takes a potion and becomes Mr Hyde.Robert Louis Stevenson - the motive of the novella The Strange Caseof Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde- was born in Edinburgh in 1850 and died atthe young age of forty-four. He wrote the book in 1886. As a babe hewas very close to his nurse and when he was ill she used to read himBible stories as he was brought up in a grim Catholic tradition, which he later rebelled against. This led to his fascination for hiscitys low life and for bizarre characters, which proved rich materialfor later stories.deacon Brodie lived in Edinburgh in the eighteenth century. His doublelife is thought to have been the inspiration for Robert LouisStevenson to write Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Deacon Brodie lived anextravagant lifestyle, which even his hi gh position in Edinburghsociety could not support, so he turned to crime to finance hislifestyle. This concept of a doppelganger - a shadow of a differentside of a human - was used in Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde to create thesame effect.Stevenson may also have found inspiration from a book, calledFrankenstein by Mary Shelley as it is of the mediaeval horror genrejust like Stevensons book. A gothic horror story contains a plothinged on suspense and mystery, which often involves the supernatural.another(prenominal) writer, who may have influenced Stevensons writing, isCharles Darwin and his theory of evolution.Within Stevensons gothic horror story - Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde -suspense is added by the descrip... ...nerable. He portrays evil to be strong,as you only think of yourself and what you want, and this is why Hydeattempts to take over Jekyll. Although Hyde seems to take over Jekyllthere is still a part of Jekyll there, which makes Hyde take thepotion to become Jekyll again, so that he can then end the evil of thebeast he created which also means ending his life too.In conclusion I feel Stevenson has successfully portrayed evil throughhis characters, setting and language. I enjoyed the different ways itsuggests evil and I believe Robert Louis Stevenson has accomplishedhis aim to write a gothic horror book and The Strange case of DrJekyll and Mr Hyde is truly a book of its time as creating an evilside that, if made subject to, would alter prescript civilized behaviourand conduct horrific violence was unheard of at the time the book waspublished.

Sobbing on the piano bench, knack over the tainted keys, I realized my mother had also begun to cry, with Cricket in her lap. The only other time Id ever seen my mother shed a single tear was months before, at Martys memorial service.

The Lady of Shallot :: Lady of Shalott Essays

The Lady of Shallot   Alfred, Lord Tennyson, was known for his pictorial poetry, characterizes as painterly, picturesque with visual detail and images that represent mood, situation and carry emotion (ENG 103 Lecture on Victorian Age and Literature). The imagery of emotion is especially spare in the poets depiction of nature, in the form of sober. In examining The Lady of Shallot, the sense of eminent gloom of destiny is illustrated.   Through the personification of nature, a vivid glance into a brothel keeper doomed by her fate.  A picture is illuminated in the description 0f where the lady dwells. The reader gets a feel for the separation of the lady and her threatening destiny, in the imagery of her natural surroundings. This can be seen with Willows whiten, aspens whiten, aspens quiver, /little breezes dusk and shiver (The Longman Anthology Of British Literature, p.1913, LL. 10-11). The fear brought on by quiver and chill, suggests the nature elemen ts know what lies ahead, which is Camelot. The fearful destiny of the lady can be visualized with the description of her isolation on an island, in which the river is flowing down to Camelot.   The melancholy brought about by the personification of nature is echoed in the constant imagery of death. The picture of the bringer of death preparing for funeral projects the melancholy associated with death.  Nobody can see the lady, yet a few can her song.  The few include a foreshadowing of a funeral attendant, a Willow-veil and natures influence with by the moon the reaper weary (19,33).   Emotions develop through imagery of the changing weather.  As the lady sees Lancelot, the sky is All in the blue unclouded weather (91). This may depict a happy drawing card of the lady sees him likened by nature with His broad clear brow in sunlight glow (100). However the weather shifts with emotion after the lady discoveries her damn is a melancholic death, when she decides to leave Shallot in pursuit of Lancelot. The imagery, mournful of her destined death with heaven waiting in The pale yellow woodland were waning, /The broad streaming his banks complaining, /Heavily the low sky raining.

AbOrT :: essays research papers

AbortionAbortion has been and always will be a major, controversial topic in the United States. The controversy is whether to allow a woman to have an abortion or outlaw abortions. The Unites States Supreme Court was supposedly departure to make a final decision on the abortion controversy. Instead, the Supreme Court put the burden of deciding on the government of each state. This seems foul because a woman should have that choice. A woman should have the choice to have her baby aborted in cases involving rape, because of the expensive cost of raising a baby, and in a situation where the woman is just a teenager. One reason why women should be given the choice to abort a baby involves cases of rape. Statistics say that rape happens to women many times each day in the United States. When a woman is raped and possibly becomes pregnant, she is not at fault. She may steady become traumatized. It should not be her responsibility to take care of the baby for the rest of her life and po ssibly on her own. To have an abortion would be the tho choice.Another reason why women should have the choice of having an abortion would be the cost of raising a baby. A woman needs to take into esteem the high cast of raising a child. It is necessary to feed the baby fountainhead so that he or she will grow healthy and strong. A baby also needs to be well clothed. Furthermore, there is the fact that a child may need medical attention, which can be exceedingly expensive. To have an abortion would be the only choice. The final reason why women should have the choice to abort a child is when she is just a teenager. This could harry the rest of her and her boyfriends life. Teenage women may not be emotionally ready for raising a baby. Getting a good nurture may be forgotten. If she has an abortion, she can concentrate of her education. Also, the girl and boy will learn a lesson never to fool around. This would encourage them to do exceptionally well in school. Again, to have an a bortion would be the only choice for a teenager. If abortion was outlawed, a raped woman would more that likely feel confused and insecure.

Form, Content, and Subject Matter

Form, Content, and Subject Matter GENZ 220Z-Art Critique Paper Shelby M. Dykes In this paper, I will discuss the form, content, and loose issuance of three diametric exposures. Each of the keystoneings represents the following representational painting, abstract painting, and a portrait. The paintings I have chosen argon Edward Hoppers Nighthawks 1942, Wassily Kodinskys colour in Studies Squ ares and Concentrentic Circles 1913, and Pablo Picassos Self-Portrait 1907. Representational paintings show clear objects or chargets and have a clear study matter in the painting. The give in matter is quite unequivocal in Edward Hoppers Nighthawks. The subject matter is the dominating, brightly lit diner. The diner is proportionately large. It is built on mostly straight airs, both tumid and horizontal. With the exception of the curve located at the intersection of the two streets. The declivity of the ceiling of the diner and the line of the green window ledge intersect with the just lines depicted by the window frame. The interaction of the horizontal and vertical lines lookms to be an essential element in the painting. It produces a pronounced angularity in shape. The boilersuit shape is a rectangle. This is conditionn with the windows of the diner, as well as, the vertical rectangle in the building in the background. I notice a triangle formed by the bills light on the background buildings window. The lines formed by the diner window seem to trap the people inside the ominous diner. The hammy applys of light colors against dark colors add variety to the painting and bounce the painting the feeling of depth. The darkness seen byside the window re completelyy gives a feeling of impending doom to the customers inside.Outside, there is no one seen walking the street. The yellows painted show the electric light from inside the diner. This achieved by the high observe of the yellow. The low value of green is evident in the building in the background. Th e brilliant streak of green along the window sill is a great standard of green at its saturation. The building is proportionately larger than the patrons sitting inside. The diner gives a feeling of doom and loneliness this is the content. It seems as if Hopper wants us to see the people dining, but he does not emphasize the human element in the painting. It is strange that the window does not show a reflection of the mantrap looking into it. The man sitting at the corner of the counter is dark and looks sinister. Is he a bad guy? Even the coffee pot commode the counter seems proportionately larger than the people. The coffee pot dominates the size of the people. I dont see a door in the diner, are the customers pin down? the painting brings the suggestion of once upon time. Edward Hoppers, Nighthawks, is a clear example of a representational painting.Although I think other p cheaticipants would agree that the diner is the subject matter and the form is clear, would a viewer a gree with the ominous, scary feeling that I feel makes up the content? Wassily Kandiskys, Colour Studies Squares and Concentric Circles is the painting I have chosen to demonstrate abstract painting. Abstract art does not have a recognizable subject matter. Instead the color, form, line, and even texture are clearly the subject. It is completely non-representational the content is the feeling evoked by the color and form, etc. This painting represents something that is not visual. It represents a sound, emotion, or experience. Upon looking at this painting, I dissolve see that Kandinsky used careful planning in the painting of what at first seems like just circles. The painting is making my eye look at the contrast of the color and the contrast of the shapes. The composition is made up of twelve sections of relatively equal portioned circles that are inside of squared-off into divisional angles. The square shape consumes all the space of the overlapping colors created by the circle s.The painting has perfect balance, movement, rhythm, proportion, variety, and unity Even texture is achieved by the circular lines and brush strokes. I can roughly picture Kandinskys brush moving around the painting in quick, swooping motions. The linear design of the painting is clear with the vertical and horizontal, fine lines painted as squares. Without a doubt, the all-at onceness of the painting is created by the color. Kandinsky used such a wide range of color techniques that when I close my eye upon viewing the painting, the image is tranquilize present. The colors are bright primary and secondary colors mixed with more earthy hues. The two overlapping circles on the bottom left are made evident by the low value of the green mixing with the saturated red to create nearly a murky. The contrast created by the black and yellow square touching is eye-catching. The gradation in the upper left square is evident by the continuous changes from the swirl surrounding the circle. I t changes from yellow to green, past to blue and back to yellow Can you feel the excitement in my description? This is what the painting makes me feel while participating. Despite the sectioned off circles and squares, the painting demonstrates unity. That is, the painting forms togetherness, despite contrasts of details and regions. The color also helps define the depth. As depth was clearly seen in Nighthawks, the depth of Colour Studie is not as quick evident. Look at the bottom left square. The circle seems somewhat flat. Now view the upper left square. It gives the feeling of protrusion. It seems as if the circle is popping out of the square. On the other hand, the circle located in the upper right square seems like it is sunken into a spiral. This is achieved by Kandinskys ability to use different hues at minimal and maximum values around each circle. The bottom left circle seems like it is lacking depth due to the constant use of the saturated red and no visible contrasting c olors swirling around it. The abstract art, Colour Studies Squares and Concentric Circles, creates an intense feeling of here and now. That is an element that is much lacking in the representational paintings. The portrait painting I have selected is Pablo Picassos, Self-Portrait 1907. This is another example of abstract, even though it has a clear subject matter. The subject matter of course, is the man depicted in the painting, Pablo Picasso. The paining however, clearly demonstrates excellent use of line, texture, and color. All are seen in a very simple, non-confusing form. The painting looks like something I could have created, or even something found in a coloring book. The lines are so apparent that it looks like an outline could have been made and almost filled in with color. If I had to make an assumption, I would think that Picasso started the painting with eyes. The all-at-onceness of this painting is achieved by the hugely proportionate eyes and bold lines surrounding t hem. The distinct, awakeness of the eyes seems evident with the bold lines and brown hue in the pupils. Why are his eyes so much larger than the rest of the painting? I very dont think that in true relation to the facial features they are larger. The nose is distinct, as well as the ears, but the eyes cool it seem largely dominating. The lines that make up the nose and cheekbones are vertical and create an up and down movement with the eye. However, the up and down movement is over-shadowed by the horizontal movement the bold eyebrow line creates. Also over-shadowing is the circular bold lines of the eyes and eye lid creases. The lines making up the mouth are so much smaller. The color of the lips closely resembles the same hue of the surrounding skin itself. Did Picasso want us to see his eyes more blatantly or is that just the way he saw himself, awake and aware? The lines painted also seem to be apparently painted with direct diagonal strokes. The line making up the forehead seem s to come to a point of the jaw and cheek bone if it were extended. The diagonal lines in the collar of the shirt create shapes and give dimension without the use of heavy shading, which is so apparent in representational pieces. There is some slight shading on his right lapelle. This is created by variations in the value of the pale green color and darker olive green color created. I also notice the vertical symmetry achieved by the straight line from the nose, to the upper lip, and continued down to the straight line in the shirt. These vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines all come together to give the painting balance. Texture may be seen in the brush strokes of the hair. Each stroke seems uniquely defined with a bit of space left between them to give the impression of the hair maroon clumping together on the forehead. Texture is also seen is the redness created in the skin surrounding the nose. The skin appears to be rougher in touch in the areas. Texture in the painting is created on both the right and left of the jaw in the orange background. The viewers right side seems to have less paint giving it a high value of orange. The viewers left side of the painting seems like more paint was used to create a low value of the orange. The color used creates that of warm feelings. The earth tones seen are orange, brown, peach, and pale green. Look at the value of color in the ear. You can see where white was added to the lobe of the ear in comparison to the distinct peach found in the inner ear. The pink added above the eye brow is also seen below the eye, on the side of the nose, and under the tough jaw line. This does give the perception of depth in the facial features. The portrait of Picasso is clear in content. He evokes feelings of awareness, even though he appears to be wearing something similar to that of a Halloween mask. The portrait is distinctly abstract, although clear subject matter is defined. In conclusion, the three works of art chosen repres ent three different types of paintings. All have distinct content, even though the subject matter is not always apparent. This shows that both subject matter and form will help the viewer participate in the art work to determine the content.

Department of Homeland Security Essay

The Department of Homeland Security was established in the year 2002 as a part of the United States effort to combat against terrorists attacks. It was also instituted to resolve against natural disasters that will greatly affect the United States people. Its primary goal is to protect the civilian inside or out of the country. Its main functionality is to prepare for actions to suffice to municipal crisis. It also provides regulation on cyber security issues. The said section set color codes to describe the threat levels of terrorists in the country. Being well regarded as one of the largest department in the federal cabinet, this department should think of ways on how to perform its function to protect the people of the United States of America. From the said functions of the department of homeland security, it is the role of the concerned department to deal with problems arising that would threaten its citizen. It should not interfere with the scope of work of the other departm ents. There are a crapper of work to be done in monitoring possible threats by the terrorists against the lives and properties of the United States people. Likewise, the department also helps in dealing with people affected by various calamities such hurricanes, earthquake, flash floods and other nature-driven calamities. With respect to the militarys role, the main difference is that the military is not being used to meddle with the domestic issues or internal affairs but for combat and monitoring of the countrys security. Normally, military is under the command of the Department of National Defense, the department centre on military affairs overseas. This can show the major role differences played by both the military and the homeland security department. In the alike(p) way, the military should be cautioned not to go beyond its jurisdiction particularly with the civilian communities. Their participation should be limited on providing assistance on calamity-affected masses toge ther with the other agencies of the government.

Do not rock the boat! Essay

Everybody has there own prospective on what a outflank friend is, from psyche that makes them laugh, to simply somebody that just listens to their problems. In my eyes a best friend is a real friend, someone you can count on, someone that is forever there for you when you need them the most. And that makes them a best friend in my book. Trying to find one is a different story. I have had my fair allot of bad friendships they had me fooled that they were always there for me when all they had were bad intentions. At that point I had given up on the idea that there was someone in this world that I can trust, somebody that I can be myself around. Was I asking for too much? That all changed on September 11, 2010 at Kearny high school, in Ms. Cooks first period English class. It was quite a small room so it was very noticeable when someone walked thru those rich doors into the crowd room. One by one, I studied each new fresh faces walking into the class. Each facial expression sharing a nervous, curios, but exiting look. About twenty dollar bill minutes after the late bell rang (that girl was always late to everything) a dark skinned, Indian looking, Mexican about 62 in height walked into the classroom. Her long wavy jet-black hair caught my attention first, then her bright brown oval eyes, thick bone structure, and her big bright blue Jansport backpack she was caring in her right hand. I have not seen a backpack that large since fifth grade and for a second, I fancy we where back in Elementary school. To make my description about her more clear she looked worry a thicker and taller version of Pocahontas. One of the Disney princesses I grew up reflexion as a little kid. Her name is Jocelyn Guzman-Diaz, a corny, full of life, girl that just moved from Oregon to San Diego, California to get closer to her father. Spring run away weekend of 2010, at Camp Managuay was the icinessest weekend I ever had to endure. Cold rainy days, tree roaring nights, the smell of burning oak roasting in the fire pits, the feel of the ash against your face, and the sound embrassing of all the JROTC cadets tan combat boots crunching the crisp frozen grass to wake up to every morning, in our camo uniforms. As cold and unpleasant as that sounds, that weekend was the best weekend I have ever had with my bestfriend. With tons of and tummy hurting jest moments we had along the way. Jocelyn and I got selected to go to camp Managuay, a woodsy campsite located about two hours away from Mesa college with our JROTC instructors and about eighty or so cadets. We arrived in a whale looking tour bus. It dropped us off in front of a huge dark green hurt tree with blue tent sacks sped out on the dirt. We would stay up till one, two, even three in the morning laying in our cold hard tent cracking jokes knowing we would have to wake up at six o clock in the morning. I remember this special moment where the instructors marched us down to the Managuay Lake to go canoeing. The wide, open enchanting lake felt as if I was in wonderland. We all took turns grabbing a bright yellow banana looking canoe. One by one canoes started plopping in the freezing water. Jocelyn is the most careless person in the world when it comes to following instructions and the first regularise she breaks is DO NOT ROCK THE BOATShe is in her boat singing and swaying her long wavy hair back and fourth. Then all of a jerky she swayed too far to the left and her met the water and the canoe met her head. I broke down In laughter. The more I looked at her the harder I laughed. It felt like I was going have a giggle attack That moment had our trip. We forgot all about those cold, wintery, nights and the dirty, rough, uneven, tent floors. I chose to write about this day because contempt the harsh conditions that we were faced with we made the best of it and had fun with it. We did not care how people were looking at us or how strange they thought we were because we were having the best time.

Management planning of Arthur Andersen

IntroductionThe Arthur Andersen Company is an accountancy firm that was founded in the year 1913 by Clarence Delaney and Arthur Andersen. It is an accountancy firm that deals in auditing, consulting and tax evaluation services. It is based in Illinois. About five years ago, the play along was one of the most successful accounting firms with an employee base of about eighty five thousand.Presently, the firm has only two hundred employees under its name. Similarly, its revenue has fallen from 9.3 billion dollars in the year 2002 to actually low amounts in 2007. In that fateful year 2002, the firm mixed-up its accounting license as a result of fraudulent dealings. Consequently, the firm has lost its business concern, and is no longer in serious operation. It is a good example of a telephoner that did not apply focusing skills in its operations. (Harold, 2003)Planning component part of management in The Arthur Andersen CompanyManagement within any organization is normally assi gned four main roles, these include leading, controlling, organization and cookery. The formulation aim of management involves developing an organizations mission and defining specific methods of accomplishing it. This encompasses a variety of ideas. Planning may be applied when starting a project or organization or it may be applied in the day to day running of the organization. The organization under review was already in existence so we shall examine its day to day planning functions. (Norbert, 1967)The first management planning issue that the company under review fai conduct to see was financial planning. The company did not allocate its budget to projects that would generate long term income. It focused on short term gains like the WorldCom audit that preceded its bankruptcy. financial planning involves monitoring the amount of money coming in and out of the organization and noting any fund misappropriation. This was clearly a duty that the Arthur Andersen Company failed s ince it lost a lot of finances. This aspect also involves planning salary packages, employee benefits, insurance and retirement packages. Before the great fall of the Andersen Company, this aspect was looked into. The employee base was quite huge and complaints were quite rare.Another aspect of planning is insurance policy formulation. This entails coming up with strategies that counter the effect of competitors. The Andersen Company played its part in good policy formulation during the 80s and 90s. It knew that IT consultancy was receiving a lot of attention it therefore decided to focus on this sector and tripled its revenue. But in the years following 2000, the organization did not plan its policies well. It decided to focus on clients wishes instead of establishing a reputation for being a heterosexual person forward firm. This policy planning should be put together with policy development and policy implementation. (Norbert, 1967)Thirdly, management involves human resource p lanning. This begins from recruitment of new employees when jump the organization to hiring of new employees. This was well done by the Arthur Andersen Company at its inception because most of its employees were in line with the companies mission. In the mid twentieth century, the company founder frequently took his employees for training and ensured that they were in top notch condition. But this was later forgotten because the firm hired employees that were dishonest and untrustworthy. The company did not prize its employees to ensure that they were inline with its founding principles. It should be noted that the employees considered during planning encompass all the departments in an organization including managerial posts. The Andersen Company failed in this area because one of its aged(a) representatives in the Legal Department Madam Nancy Temple clearly did not follow due procedures. She failed to withhold company principles. This could have been prevented if employee evalua tion was done.Impact of effectual issues, ethics and corporate responsibility on management planning.A code of ethics within an organization is a sure recipe to bring about returns on ones enthronization. Contrary to what people believe that ethics are quite theoretical, a recent research by the Ethics choice Centre in Washington has shown that employees who feel that their management adheres to strict moral standards and codes of ethics, feel valued by their organization.Consequently, productivity will be increased by these employees and company profits will be improved. It was quite clear that the Arthur Andersen Company did not realize this hidden truth before the great Enron scandal that led to its downfall. The Company did not adhere to accounting code of ethics as it allowed numerous irregularities to continue within the Enron Company which it was auditing at that time. All the auditors were focusing on was whether their clients share prices were increasing. They didnt pay attention to how the income was being generated.Legalities are a key aspect to be considered during a companys operations. Companies ought to strike deals that are acceptable within the law of the land. The repercussions from lawsuits are quite severe because they can cause irreparable damage to the company name hence preventing any further business. A case in point is when the Arthur Andersen Company audited the Enron Company is engaged in a deal which it knew was unethical scarce claimed not to know that it was unlawful. These legalities should have been considered before the firm proceeded with its activities. The consequence of these illegalities was loss of its license authorized by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Even though the decision of the commission was reversed in the year 2005, the company had an ill reputation and no company worth its salt would allow them to audit their firm. (Harold, 2003)Corporate social responsibility encompasses self-aggrandizing back to the community. It is a way of saying thank you to the people who have contributed to company growth. The Arthur Andersen Company did not involve this aspect in its management plans. In the late 90s and twenty first century, the company began focusing on expanding its clients base and maximizing profits. It did not realize that bountiful back to the community would increase its authenticity. This is because, the community would feel like they were partnering or cost sharing when investing in the Companys stocks or doing business with it.Factors that influenced the companys strategic, tactical, operational and contingency planning.Strategy can be defined as an action that facilitates realization of long term goals while planning is the coordination of resources within an organization. Therefore strategic planning is analysis of all the information available to come up with the best goals for an organization. One factor that influenced the Arthur Andersen Strategic planning was est ablishing a reputation in the accounting field. It wanted to be identified with good intentions and strong principles. This was viable during its inception by the founding member.Tactical planning involves putting the strategical plan into action. It usually involves the budgeting process, considering alternatives, studying the market and its competitors. In addition, reviews must be made and reports be made. One factor that influenced this aspect of the company was its revenue. The company wanted to make as much as it could. This meant that it could overlook ethical issues as long as a return on investment was plausible thus causing the companys downfall. (Erica, 2006)Lastly, operational planning involves the day to day running of the company. This normally involves proper communication between management and its employees. One factor that influenced this aspect was output generated. The company did not adhere to good communication practices within its structure and instead focused on input. forgetful communication led to the companys fall.ConclusionGood management practices are backbone of success within any organization. The Arthur Andersen Company had started out with these practices but was swayed away from them in latter years. If it had stuck to its founding principles, it would still be in operation today.ReferenceHarold, K. Philosophies & Democracy Essay

Democracy and capitalism gave way to concentration of wealthiness amongst a small pigeonholing of people. Private entrepreneurship got a boost due to capitalism. Given this scenario, many private entrepreneurs rose to build their industrial empires. at that place be many examples, where, the starting target of a given business was zero, and it rose to become a leading international business house. Increase in business, resulted in exaggerated accumulation of wealth in the hands of a few, and that was the time, when these new class of rich entrepreneurs, gave a thought to the society, inwhich they have been operating, and which has supported their enterprise in its rise. Carnegie Melon, at the lineage of industrial revolution, and Bill Gates, at the end of the twentieth century, are two solid examples of business rise from zero to international giants. Both of them, spent their undecomposed life, in amassing wealth, and as they grew, they started framing embodied philosophies, which put society at the focus of their activities. While they applied the rule of everything is fair in business, they saturnine towards society at the fag end of their lives.Corporate philosophies, by and large have nothing new to say, except that they work for the society, and they care for their customers. All corporate philosophies are concentrated around these central themes, in different words and sentences. Often, it is proved that corporate philosophies are not as sweet as they sound. When it comes to business, these philosophies are sacrificed, partially or richly. Was only genuine software skill responsible for the stupendous rise of Bill Gates and Microsoft? Of course no. There is in fact, considerable shrewdness going intothe rise of Microsoft. In fact, corporate houses, as they grow, turn their attention towards betterment of society, in one or the other way. There are numerous examples to prove this, in the time gap between Carnegie Melon and Bill Gates. However, t hey are targeted at multiplication of business. An average American fully understands the implications of these corporate philosophies, and their implied meanings. For example, when cyber attacks started assuming alarming proportions, Bill Gates ordered a change in their corporate philosophy. It implied change in the approach ofall software development. Now, instead of adding new features to the software, the focus was to be laid on protection of the software, because, Bill Gates argued, In the past, weve made our software and services more get for users by adding new features and functionality, and by making our platform richly extensible . . . but all those great features wont matter unless customers trust our software, wrote Gates. So now, when we face a choice between adding features and resolving security issues, we need to choose security. ( fiducial computing, para 2) Some of Microsofts perennial critics claim the possible action is long overdue, and question whether or no t Microsoft will follow through on its promises, as the company could be forced to bear a lessening in the number of new features in its programs and significant new product delays. Some go further in arguing that such a big security initiative cannot be undertaken without subjecting the Windows operating system source code to public domain something the company has fought hard to avoid. Writes an observer, in his opinion. ( Trustworthycomputing, check bit 4) What is true of Microsoft , is perhaps true of other companies also. An average American is well aware of the status of the company, and its capacity to deliver the promised goods, and is also right in mind the ethical behavior of a company. Conclusively it can be said that despite the tall claims made by the corporate philosophies, the average American of the ins and outs of that firm. Health Care Interview

There atomic number 18 many components to a hospital or medical facility. All of them argon necessary to shoot a properly functioning environment. The hand brake section of a hospital is a fast paced world. You rescue to be constantly on your toes and prepared for whatever may come through the doors. There are many passel that work in an emergency room to make it run smoothly. Techs, nurses, CNAs, LVNs, and doctors all work side by side to help those who are critically injured. Without all these people it would be polish off chaos.Triage is usually the first step of the emergency room and helps determine severity of each uncomplaining. Once through triage, the patient is either sent to a contrasting area of emergency or another part of the hospital. The emergency department is usually broken down into different parts as well. Typically, there is a trauma area, an area for those less urgent, resuscitation areas, and even a psychiatric area. Trauma is reserved for those with life threatening injuries or illness and is always stocked with the equipment infallible for these cases.Resuscitation areas are for those who come in unconscious or DOA (dead on arrival). These rooms are equipped with all the equipment necessary to try and save someones life. There are many things done in an emergency department. Vitals are the usually the first thing when a patient comes into the emergency room. An brand or illness may not be immediately visible vitals are an easy way to check off if anything is out of the ordinary unspoiled off the bat. When injury is more apparent, like a broken bone, x-rays can be done right in the emergency room. EKGs are often performed on those complaining of chest pain. The emergency room also does the simple stuff like suturing wounds or doing ultrasounds. As you can see there is not much the emergency room cannot do. It is the center of the hospital. My interviewee specifically works in the emergency department of Valley Childrens Hos pital. Although the primary patients are children eighteen years of age and younger, they will accept all patients until stabilized and able to be transported to the correct hospital. A childrens hospital is a lineament of specialty hospital. There are many other types of specialty hospitals, but this type specifically caters to children. The emergency at this hospital sees many different types of injuries and illness. Although, this hospital is well known for seeing the sickest children from Bakersfield to Sacramento, they care for kids with rare cancers and other life threatening illnesses. I chose to interview Jeff Gonzales who is a technician in the emergency room. Upon starting the interview, I quickly got the feeling that the technicians do a lot more than I would have thought. The technicians are usually the first person the patient deals with. They start the initial work up and take the vitals. After the nurses and doctors have decided on a proper course of treatment, the tec hnicians often help with the procedures or grabting the patient to the correct area of the hospital. The technicians may also draw blood for cultures or even splint a patient. We are kind of all over the place, go where I am needed and help where I can, explains Jeff. Like any good profession these days, there is some education that is required to attain a position like this. Jeff went to school for phlebotomy and was originally planning on being a fire fighter. After gaining the emergency learn from the fire academy, Jeff was alas injured and could no longer go after that career. However, his emergency training comes in handy for the emergency room, he states, you have to be prepared for anything, having the EMT training helps me when things get hectic. As for additional training, the only thing that needs to be kept to date is his phlebotomy license. All other training is provided by the hospital and is typically done on an annual basis. Working in an environment with so many d ifferent people could cause problems. You have to learn to institutionalize your coworkers and work together to the best of your ability. Letting management know about any problems right away helps a lot because the issues can get address immediately. Like any job, there may be that one person you do not get along with, but as long as you do your best to just do your job and avoid drama, you will be okay, he says. Taking care of the patients is always the number one antecedence in hospitals. Jeff informed me that the best way to make it through the day is to be compassionate and have patience. Dealing with children can be hard, especially to those who have children of their own. When we lose a patient, it is hard not to take it personally, he says. That is where the compassion comes in. Losing anyone is not a happy time, but dealing with children, it is difficult to not get attached. Being patient is important because you are dealing with kids. Sometimes the children do not underst and what we are asking or why we are thrust them, so being patient is very important, says Jeff. Although there are many changes starting to roll out in health care, Jeff informed me that he has not personally experienced any of them so far.He explained that most of the changes occurring in his place of employment were in upper positions. He did mention that he thinks that engineering has come a long way in the medical field and is heading the right direction. Electronic medical records have made every locution of patient care easier and improved communication between doctors. Also, the advances in surgery have also made things in the emergency room easier. With lasers and other figurer controlled surgeries, the turnaround for recovery is much lower and often times an overnight stay is not even necessary. After taking a deeper look into this department of a hospital it is easy to understand why it is so important. Without an emergency department, trauma and critically ill patients would have nowhere to go. With so many people in on place it is hard to keep things organized. All the parts of the department must function like a well-oiled machine to keep up with the chaos that occurs in emergency rooms. The teams of medical professionals have big responsibilities to their patients, especially the children.

You Suck: A Love Story Chapter 29~30

Chapter Twenty-nineDont You Hate Running into Your Ex?As soon as she unlocked the advanced lofts security door from the route, Jody smelled blood, burned flesh, and shampoo. A case of the willies that felt akin an electric serpent slithered up her spine. She went up the stairs, light on the b alones of her feet, ready. She heard either tick in the apartment, the refrigerator motor, taleboards shifting, the huge cat Chet snoring in the bedroom, and, of course, most adept breathing. The lights were off. He was sitting in a chamberpotvas sling-back chair, barefoot, in a pair of Tommys jeans and a T-shirt, drying his hair with a towel. Jody stopped by the kitchen.Fledgling, said the vampire. Im forever and a day pleasantly surprised when I am reminded of how lovely you are. Surprises are rarified at my age.Must assume surprised the fuck bring out of you to have that Honda toast you, then, huh? She felt herself tightening d ingest, the electric jangle channeling itself into an a wareness, an edge. It wasnt fear anymore, it was readiness. An unpleasant one, yes. I assume your little servant is safe for now.Well, you know, she was winded for a few minutes from kicking your ass, still she is just a little young lady. The vampire laughed, and Jody couldnt inspection and repair tho smile. She went to the windows at the front of the loft and opened them. Smells standardised burned meat in here.Shell have to go, you know, said the vampire, still smiling. No, she wont, Jody off-key on her heel. face him.Of course she will. All of them precisely you. Im quite tired of creation alone, little one. You can come away with me, just as we planned.Jody was stunned at his density. I was trickery to you, Elijah. I never int obliterateed to go away with you. I was just building to find out how to be a vampire. What were you press release to do the next night, then if your pet hadnt bronzed us, I mean?I thought Id send you away.No you didnt.I thought Id let the Animal s kill you, standardised they were going to anyway. No you didnt.I dont know. The edge was slipping. I dont know. Maybe she was going to go with him. She had felt so alone, so lost.Ah, so here we are again. Lets pretend like all this unpleasantness hasnt happened, and its the next night, and here we are, just the 2 of us. The exclusively ones of our kind. What will you do, Jody? But we arent the only ones of our kind.We are the only ones you need worry intimately. You do know that you are the first new vampire in a hundred years?Jody tried not to show her surprise. How lucky for me, she said.Oh, youre not the only one Ive turned. Ive turned many. Youre the only one who could weather the change with her mind intact. The others had to be, well, decommissioned. You killed them?Yes. But not you. Help me clean up and then well kick the bucket, together.Clean up?There are certain rules, love. Rules that I set follow up myself, and the first of them is make no more vampires. Yet youve let loose a tempest of fledglings, and they all have to be cleaned up, including your boy pet.Make no more? What about me? You do me.I didnt expect you to survive, love. I thought you would be an amusement, a break in monotony, an interlude, scarcely you distinguished yourself. And now you necessitate me to run off with you.Well live like royalty. I have resources you couldnt imagine.Youre going stolen jeans, sugar daddy.Well, yes, I will have to make my way to one of my caches.I have an idea, Jody said, and this was authoritatively the reason she had come here, by herself, knowing that he would be here. Or at least hoping. How about I give you enough money to get you out of town and you do that, just like we promised Rivera and Cavuto? You leave me alone, you leave Tommy alone, you just leave.Elijah stood now, tossed the towel on the chair, and moved to her so quickly that she could barely plain mind him move. Art, music, literature, said Elijah. Desire, passion, creator t he best of man and the best of beast. Together. You would assign no to that?He put his hand on her cheek and she let him.Love? Jody said, looking into his look they reflected like drops of mercury in her night vision. For fagot tales. We are the stuff from which nightmares are made. Make nightmares with me.Wow, nice offer. Cant imagine why you havent had any takers for a hundred years. Jody grabbed his wrist. If he wouldnt leave, she could take him. She was a vampire, too.The vampire had been smiling, but his smile changed aspect, going from pleased to predatory. So be it, then. His hand was at her neck in an instant, she didnt see him move or have a happening to react. Suddenly she couldnt move her arms or legs, and there was an intense pain behind her ear and under her jaw. She screamed, releasing a sound she couldnt imagine approach path out of a human, more like something youd hear from a tortured cat. He clamped his other hand everyplace her mouth.I didnt teach you everyth ing in our one night together, love. She watched helplessly as he tossed his head back and his fangs unsheathed. troy weight Lee squared off against Drew at the end of the dog-food aisle, two misfortunate fighting swords in hand.Bring it, stoner, Troy Lee said. He spun the swords. Drew fell into a crouch by the dishwashing liquids.Im fast now, Drew said.Uh-huh, Troy said. He whipped the swords through the air in a deadly fanning motion. Hed been training since he was a child he wasnt afraid, especially of Drew.Hey, came a womans voice from dependable beside him. Troy Lee looked over, lightning quick, just in time to register what looked like a full moon culmination at his face. There was a sporty clang and Troy was nearly flipped over backwards when the iron skillet sprout him in the forehead. Blue let it drop to her side and grinned at Drew. Ive always wanted to do that.Housewares used to be my aisle, Drew said.Take him, said Blue. Let him imbibing some of your blood before he dies. She headed toward a kerfuffle in the can aisle. Save some, boys. Mamas got a broken nose that needs to heal.Jody felt her own fangs extend and her kneecaps quiver as Elijah fed on her, but otherwise she couldnt move. How could she have been so stupid? He was eight hundred years mature of course he hadnt taught her everything. Of course he was stronger than she was she was stronger than Tommy, and she had only been a vampire a couple of months longer than he had.If she could stay conscious, maybe when he stopped feeding she could make her move. Could he reduce her to dust like a human, or would he have to do something else? Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Why didnt she know all of this? Why wasnt she acting on instinct? Where was the predator mind when you call for it?Her vision started to tunnel down she was losing consciousness. She could hear rapid footsteps outside, though. First below, then across the street, then below again. Elijah heard them, too, and he loosened his grip for an instant, but before she could twist away, his fingers dug into her neck and jaw again. and so a black blur flew through the window and she heard something thud on the floor over by the kitchen. There was another loud thud and Elijah released her and she fell to the floor. She tried to push herself up, but something was thrown over her and she heard a bombilate sound. She heard screaming and smelled burning flesh, glass breaking, then someone was lifting her, carrying her. She couldnt move or even fight anymore. She let go, let herself float away, but the final stage thing she heard was a girls voice narrateing, Did you feed Chet? The emperor moth sat on the dock of the St. Francis Yacht Club, watching the muddiness wash over the breakwater. Hed bypast against the advice of the homicide detectives and had left the grocery store. It was his city, and it was his place to take the battle to its attackers. He had cowered in fear long enough. His wickedly pointed sword lay on the dock at his side. The men, Bummer and Lazarus, were sleeping in a fuzzy pile at his back.Ah, gentle warriors, how do we engage in battle when our enemy moves with such elegant thievery? Perhaps we should return to the Safeway and help defend.Bummers left ear twitched, and he let out a muffled ruff in his sleep.A thick wedge of fog was moving down from the opening in the breakwater and it caught the emperor moths attention because it appeared to be moving across the wind from the west. Yes, it was indeed the cold breeze was coming straight over the breakwater from the north. The fog bank bubbled thick as it moved, tendrils reached out and then were reabsorbed like the false feet of some crawling creature. The Emperor climbed to his feet and roused the men, snatched Bummer up before the sleepy terrier could get his bearings, and headed toward the clubhouse with Lazarus at his heels. He crouched in a shadow by the entrance to the restrooms, holding the hounds as he watched. The fo g bank enveloped the end of the dock, paused, then dissipated as if a fan had been turned on it, and three tall figures stood on the dock, a man and two women. They wore long coats, cashmere, the Emperor thought, but he couldnt for the life of him remember why he exponent know that. They moved down the dock toward him as if they were floating. The Emperor could see their outlines in the moonlight jawlines and cheekbones that looked as if theyd been chiseled, square shoulders, and narrow hips. They might have been brother and sisters, except one of the women was of African descent, the other looked like she might be Italian or Greek. The man was a head taller than the women and looked Nordic, perhaps German, with close-cropped white hair. All were as pale as bleached bone.As they passed him the Emperor pulled the hounds closer and Bummer let out a threatening ruff. They stopped. The man turned. How long have you been here? he asked.Forever, I echo, said the Emperor. The man smiled a nd nodded, then turned and was on his way. I know how you feel, he said without looking back.Gustavo and Jeff found Barry hiding in the shelves among the toilet-paper packages. When they got close, Barry burst out of the TP and made a run for the end of the aisle, pulling napkins, aluminum foil, garbage bags, and plastic silverware off the shelves as he went to slow his pursuers. Gustavo went down first, slipping on a package of plastic forks. Jeff high-stepped through the obstacles and was right on Barrys ass until he was almost to the end of the aisle and Lash stepped out holding one of Barrys spearguns.Down Lash barked, and Barry hit the tile on his chest and slid. There was a pneumatic hiss and the sullen stainless spear thudded into Jeffs sternum and blew him back off his feet.Ow, goddammit, said the power forward, clutching at the spear and trying to pull it out of his chest.Gustavo climbed to his feet, ran to Jeff, and started yanking on the spear.Lash handed Barry a four-foo t-long stick with a blunt metal tip on it and fitted another spear into the gun. That the last one? Barry asked.Lash nodded. Wheres Clint?Just then the tall blond woman appeared at the far end of the aisle, dragging an unconscious Clint by his collar. A wide bloodstain ran from her chin to her crotch and they could see her fangs even from this distance. Bad boys. Leaving your born-again lying on the floor where people can trip over him.She dropped Clint on his face, and headed up the aisle toward them, in long, slow strides.Lash bolted, Barry right behind them, through the canvas doors into the back room, and into the walk-in dairy farm cooler. It was like a long hallway with plastic milk boxes stacked on one side and the glass dairy cases on the other. They pushed stacks of heavy one-gallon milk boxes in front of the door, then leaned with their backs against the back of the cooler, watching the store through the clear cooler doors in the dairy case, over the cartons of yogurt and cottage cheese.Whats that shes carrying? Barry asked.A frying pan, Lash said.Oh, Barry said Sorry I let her in. She was almost naked. How could you have known?Well, when she claimed she had a nooky-gram for my birthday, I should have figured something was up.Your birthdays like in March, isnt it?Yeah.Lash slapped Barry hard once on his bare scalp, then re-aimed the speargun over the yogurts.I deserved that, Barry said.Think that spear hit Jeffs heart?Had to. Its a foot through his sternum. He doesnt seem dead.Guess that means head shot. Barry shook his head. You want me to try?Nah, if I miss, you have the bang stick. Lash nodded at the long stick Barry was holding at port arms. Essentially it was a twelve-gauge shotgun shell on the end of a stick, used for killing sharks. You poked them with it and the shotgun shell fired into them at point-blank range.Ill bet she doesnt even know what it is.Get it right, Lash said. Blow her fucking brains out. They looked at each other as they heard the refrigeration compressors and fans wind down. wherefore the lights went out. Were fucked, Lash said.Yep, Barry agreed.Chapter ThirtyBeing the Chronicles of Abby NormalDark and Mysterious Goddess of Forbidden LoveDont judge me. I have looked death in the face and made him my bitch I did what I did out of love, and I dont want to sound conceited, but OMG, we are heroes And when I say we, I mean us.Had I told you before, you would have called me losah pronounced me perky and cute beyond redemption, but now that I am secure in my own nefarious love lair and whatnot, I can at last confess, that in my naive youth, my favorite literary character was not the tentacled abhorrence Cthulu from Lovecraft as I previously stated in AP English 235, but, in fact, Pippi Longstocking. Before you condemn me for my Pippism, retrovert it outPippi drank a lot of coffee. (Because, like me, she was wise.)Pippi had by artificial means red hair (as I, myself have had, upon occasion).Pippi often wore long, stripy socks (as yours truly has been known to do).Pippi had superhuman strength. (It could happen.)Pippi kicked ass. (Not unlike your humble narrator.)Pippi was a kid who lived without parents in her own house. (Go, girl)With a monkey. (Havent you always wanted a monkey?)What Longstockings did not have, was the coolest cyber-ninja-sex-magic boyfriend to ever save the initiation and whatnot. (Props to Pip, but girlfriend needed some yang to lean her yin.)Steve. My darling, my love,My heart is aflameBut OMFG, Steve,I grieve,That youre nameIs so fucking lame.I call him Foo Dog, because he guards the gate of my temple, if you know what I mean. Im wearing the diadem he made me right now. I had it on when they came for me, but thats not the thing. The thing is, I didnt save myself, I saved love. So, that night, after I told the Countess how my kind Foo Dog saved me from the vampyre, the Countess said she was going to go back to the loft to get some money and feed Chet and get th e last of Williams blood for gentle englut, for their love is truly eternal. And Jared and I were like, Well go, too, but the Countess sent us back to liberate the vampyre Flood from Jareds basement and his hideous family. So we were all, Well, okay. But when we got to Jareds house, Flood was wholly gone. And then Steve I mean Foo Dog called me and he was all, Im getting off work early, I dont want to leave you out there unprotected. So I told him where we were. Then Lord Flood comes walking out of the dark and hes all, What? What? What? And Im all, The Countess went back to the loft. And hes all, She is in danger. We must away. And I was like, Chill thee thus, for my sweet love-ninja is on the way in his fly ride.So Flood was like, Kay.I see now that my attraction to the vampyre Flood was nothing more than childish infatuation, never to be requited, because he had eye only for the Countess. So it was a little awkward when Steve showed up and I had to chill the Lord Flood and make h im sit in the backseat to show that my real affections were with Foo Dog, who was formerly known as Steve. And when we got to the loft, the windows were open, but there were no lights on. And Flood had us drive a block past, then we got out and he walked back. Then he runs up and hes like, Elijahs up there. Hes got her.And Im all, Then go get her.And Steve is like, No, Ill go get her. And he pulls this long coat out of the trunk. Its all covered with warts or something, and Im like, Nice coat, but you know, vampyreAnd Steve is like, Theyre UV LEDs. Like the lights we burned the vampires with before. And Im like, SweetSo Steve starts to put the coat on and Flood stops him and goes, Hell hear you coming up the stairs. Ill go.And Steve is all, You cant. It will burn you, too.And Flood is all, No it wont.So they are like five minutes behind the car putting together this ber-cool ensem of like an old gas mask, and a hoodie, and full-on gloves and everything, until Flood is entirely covered , wearing the long coat with the glass warts all over it, looking like one of the cenobites from Hellraiser. And Steve is like, Dont hit the wear round until you know shes covered. And he hands Flood like a black rubber tarp and a baseball bat, which totally sucked the cool right out of the ensem, but I guess was necessary. Then, just when Im about to ask how hes going to get in without being heard, we hear the Countess scream, and Flood runs across the street and about halfway up the side of the building, then turns and runs down it, then across the street, up the side of his building, and goes through the window feet fucking first. And Im like, Whoa. And Steve and Jared are like, Whoa. And a blink of an eye later we hear a thumping, and purple light comes on in the loft windows and the old vampyre comes crashing through the windows on fucking fire, falling like a comet And he lands on his feet in the middle of the street, hisses once and looks at us, and thats when Steve holds up one of his UV floodlights, and the vampyre fucking scrams down the alley across the street so fast that he was just a blur.Next thing, Flood is coming out of the building carrying the Countess, who is wrapped in the black rubber tarp and is totally roofied like a limp rag. And Steves all, Get her in the car.And Im like, Did you feed Chet? And Jared is like, Hello, Abby, the other vampyres. So Im like, Shut up. I know. So we all piled into Steves car and we took Flood and the Countess to a hotel off up on Van Ness, which Steve paid for with his Visa, which was generous and mature of him.It was one of those motels where you have your own entrance to the parking lot so they dont see you in the hallway, so Flood carried the Countess up to the room, and we carried some stuff that Steve had packed up in the trunk of his car.It was so sad. Flood just stroked the Countesss cheek and tried to get her to wake up, but she wouldnt. And he was all, Abby, she needs to feed. I wouldnt ask, but hes done something to her, shes hurt. And I would have totally done it, but Steve pulled me back, and he picks up this playmate cooler that he had us bring up, and he pulls out these pouches of blood. And he hands them to Flood and says, I took them from the university hospital. They could kick me out of school for this. And Flood is all, Thanks. And he bites a hole in one of the pouches and squeezes it on the Countesss lips and thats when I started to cry. There were like four pouches, and when he was going for the last one, Steve was like, You need to drink that one.And Flood was like, No way, its for her.And Steve was like, You know you do.So Flood like nodded and drank the last one himself, and then he just sat there by her, stroke her hair. Then Steve was like, Tommy, you know I can reverse your vampirism. Im pretty sure the process works. And Flood just looked at him and nodded. It was so sad. And then the Countess started to moan, and she opened her eyes and she saw the vampyre Flood and she was all, Hey, baby. Just like that. And I started crying again like a big wuss and Steve took Jared and me out to the car to give them some space. And Steve was like, I made this for you from my jacket. And he put this leather motorcycle jacket on me that was covered with those glass LED thingies. It was kinda heavy, because there were batteries built into the padding, but cool. And he was all, This will keep you safe. The switch is in the snap on the left cuff. Just squeeze it and the lights will come on. They wont hurt you, but you should wear sunglasses to protect your retinas. Then he put a pair of totally cyber wraparound sunglasses on me and kissed me. And I kissed him back, hard, with major tongue, and finally he pulled away, as gentle as a butterfly. So then I slapped him, so he wouldnt think I was a slut. But so he wouldnt think I was being frigid, I sort of jumped on him and wrapped my legs around him and sort of accidentally rode him to the ground and was accidentally kind of dry-humping him on the pavement when the lights on my jacket came on and people looked out their hotel windows and whatnot, so Jared ended our special romantic moment by hitting my light switch and dragging me off.And I was all, You are THE MAN, FooAnd he was all, Huh? Because I hadnt told him yet that his new name was Foo Dog.But then he said he actually had to get home and check in or his parents would freak out. And said to watch the masters until I got back, if I got a chance try to talk them into being converted. So we made out on the hood of the Honda for a while and he drove off into nights cold loneliness like the superhero that he is. (The effect was ruined, kind of, in that Jared caught a ride with him.)So I went back upstairs and sat at the foot of the masters bed, keeping guard and listening to them. They were talking softly, but I could hear them. The vampyre Flood was all, Maybe we should give it a try.And the Countess was all, What, the cure? Tommy, it cant work . Youve seen what I can do, you know what you can do. This isnt biology, this is magic.Maybe its not. Maybe its science we dont know yet.It doesnt matter. We dont even know if it works. We should try.Why would we try, Tommy? Youve only been immortal for a couple of weeks. Do you want to give up the power, the I dont know the command over your world?Well yes.You do?Yeah. I dont like it, Jody. I dont like being afraid all the time. I dont like being alone. I dont like being a killer. That woman was torturing you, Tommy. Thats never going to happen again.Thats wasnt the problem. Id get over her. The problem was that I liked it. I liked it.Then the Countess was quiet down for a while, and I thought it might be dawn or something, but I peeked over the edge of the bed and she was just staring into his eyes. She looked over at me.Hey, girlie girl, the Countess said, and she smiled at me and it felt like a gift or something. It was like, real. Then she took her watch off and threw it to m e at the end of the bed. That has an automatic almanac in it how about you set the alarm to go off about twenty minutes before sunset, so you dont get caught out again, okay? And I was going to tell her about the jacket that Foo made for me, but I kind of couldnt talk, so I just nodded and put the watch on and slid back down to the floor. Then I heard the Countess go, You arent alone. Im here. We can go where no one knows us, no one is chasing us, and Ill always be here for you.And he goes, I know. I mean alone from everyone else. Separate. I want to be human, not some foul dead thing.I thought you wanted to be special.I do, but I want to be human special because of something I did. Then it was quiet for a while, and finally the Countess goes, I love it, Tommy. Im not afraid all the time like you just the opposite. I didnt realize how afraid I used to be until I became like this. I like walking the street knowing that Im the Alpha animal, hearing and seeing and smelling everything, being part of everything. I like it. I wanted to share that with you.Its okay. You couldnt have known.I dont want to be alone either. Thats why I turned you. I love you. Then the alarm went off on Lord Floods watch, and he shut it off. Then hes all, We cant go back to the way it was, before, I mean? Where I look after you?Its not the same world, Tommy. You know that now. We were in the same room in different worlds.Okay then. I love you, Jody.I love you, too, goes the Countess. Then they didnt say anything for a long time, and when my new watch showed that the sun was up, I looked, and they were lying there, holding each other, and I could see the red stains on the pillow from their tears. And I was like, Oh, hell no

Mark Rydell’s “On Golden Pond” Essay

Mark Rydells On Golden Pond is a drama that emphasizes the stages people of various ages endures. Utilizing Erik Eriksons Psychosocial Stages as learned in class, separately of the primary(prenominal) characters mickle be placed within a stage and their age-related crises analyzed. The film being so close to a familys life, it suits relatable to the reference, prompting soulfulnessal reactions as well as implementing life examples of some of the theories studied in class. As there are plenty of characters that all develop changes throughout the movie, the most influential would be the main character, Norman Thayer. throughout the movie Norman shows many prime examples or physical, cognitive, and turned on(p) changes. either of these are tied into Normans challenge of accepting the fact of his accept age and mayhap the idea of death. On Golden Pond is based off of accepting the fact of age, family, and dying. With this being the main focus the story goes deep and wraps around Normans physical invoke. Norman is approaching his eightieth natal day, and genius can only imagine a souls physical appearance at this age. He is wrinkled all along his body, kind of like a shriveled up prune. eyeglasses rest upon his face, and he has very little hair, which he hides with a fisherman hat. Norman has many health problems such as arthritis and palpitations, but his most pressing health issue is his slow mental decline. He knows he is not at the top of his game anymore so grumpiness and a intense tongue is his c everyplace. According to Eriksons stages Norman would be considered in the modern Adulthood category. The physical state of people in this category is everything that Norman is facing.Vision becomes worse, hence why Norman wears glasses. The skin starts to become wrinkled and tough, hair loss occurs a lot faster. When this point in your life is reached the person is supposed(p) to take the time and find meaning and satisfaction in their liferather tha n to become blistery and not resolve the conflict of integrity versus despair. When a person is unsuccessful at doing so they bleed to feel as if their life has been wasted and bequeath go on with many regrets. They then will be left with feelings of bitterness and despair. Norman faces this problem because he cannot find it in him to love his life, or to accept what is happening to him as he ages.Along with physical changes throughout a persons life comes cognitive development. These are the strongest developments and changes a person goes through in their life because they affect the person the most, without us realizing whats actually happening. Throughout the movie Norman experiences cognitive development and it really shows through. When a person enters their Late Adulthood cognitive development includes many things.McGraw-Hill (2006) states the following Some aspects of retention, such as sensory memory, semantic and procedural memory, and priming appear nearly as efficien t in erstwhile(a) adults as in younger people. Other aspects, mainly the capacity of working memory and the ability to intend specific events or recently learned information, are often less efficient. This information goes along suddenly with the character Norman. sensation of Normans toughest challenges is his loss of memory, and he is in denial about it. A scene in the movie where this is present is when Normal proceeds to tell his wife Ethel that he has gotten disordered in the woods. While Norman is on his walk he becomes disoriented and scared, wandering off the tether and into the woods. After a short run that causes him to pant heavily, he finds his way back to the cottage without broad Ethel any suspicions of the incident. He then soon begins to confess to Ethel that he got lost on his walk and ask to rush back to her. She embraces him and reassures him they will go on that same walk together to regain his memory. He wonders why she loves him so much. Norman throughout the movie also has other incidents of decline in his memory. Throughout all the years he was known for taking his boat out on the pond and passing play fishing, this year when he tries its almost like he forgets how to steer it. It gets so bad that Billy takes over the boat, and Norman actually leads him into a patch full of rocks, whichdamages the boat and throws Norman overboard.Womens childhood kins with their fathers are important to them all their lives. Regardless of age or status, women who seem clearest about their goals and most quelled with their lives and personal and family relationships usually remember that their fathers enjoyed them and were actively interested in their development. (Chess, Stella). Among from all the other twists and turns a person goes through in their lifetime, aflame development is by far the best and the worst. In this movie an emotional relationship is what its solely based off of. Norman has lived his whole entire life without having a re lationship with his lady friend Chelsea. In fact she hasnt seen him in years and for the first time she is glide path to spend time for his big birthday. When Chelsea arrives the tension and resentment is so present with both the characters. Normans problem is that he doesnt realize his words and actions strongly affect Chelsea in more than one-way.One scene that really shows how Norman feels about life and that can really affect Chelsea is when they assemble for his birthday cake. He states that he has little to say for living for four score years. Instead of expressing his love to his daughter he makes her feel as if she has had no impact on him what so ever. That very next day Chelsea tells her mother Ethel that even though she is all the way in Los Angeles he makes her feel inadequate from a distance. Now every person knows that in order to build a relationship it takes two. Another relationship Norman builds throughout the movie is through Chelseas stepson Billy. Billy gives N orman a run for his silver and shows him that not everyone will take his negativity. Norman and the boy slowly begin to bond and share laughs with each other. Their biggest bonding experience is when they go fishing out on the lake to catch the big fish they shriek Walter. These experiences that Norman shares with Billy make him realize all he has missed out on with his own daughter Chelsea.Rougemont-Bucking (2013) research states the following In particular, it focuses on the fact that the limited capacity of the working memory to process now-relevant information can be turned into an advantage, when the individual is occupied by dealing with acerb emotion. Based on aphenomenon known as dual-task interference (DTI), this emotion can be dog by intense arousal due to clearly identifiable external stressors. This research on emotional development fits perfectly with Late Adulthood and maybe as to why Norman is so irrelevant with his daughter. Since his memory is going slowly decli ning, his mind doesnt find it hard to deal with unpleasant emotion. Norman is kind of like a rock he is just there and doesnt feel much.To go back to the quote from before Womens relationships with their fathers are important to them all their life This quote ties my paper together perfectly. As much as it is a quote more to Chelsea than Norman it strongly shows how a daughter can be so affected without a fathers love and support. This movie is not only based off of Normans aging and one of his last summers but it is about the growth of a daughter and fathers nonexistent relationship. Throughout the movie Norman shows many prime examples or physical, cognitive, and emotional changes. We as an audience go into the mind of Norman Thayer and learn that even as a grumpy old soul, someplace deep down in there is a huge heart with lots of love to give. work CITEDGilbert B. Effects of Communication on Employee Essay

This study explores the substantiating effects of effective dialogue on employee penury and performance. Specifically, in intends to comp atomic number 18 the results between avail employees and manufacturing employees in wrong of communication as a motivating agent. The theories consumptiond in this study to create a c erstptual frame belong be Herzberg Two factor conjecture, Goal Theory, and the circular theory of communication. The concept is that when hygiene and motivator factors atomic number 18 high, goals puke be developed, un little lav save be effective only if the message was disseminated effectively. The study uses quantitative research on service and manufacturing employees. They were surveyed use a semi-structured questionnaire with ranking questions and somewhat open-ended questions. The study found that there were only slight differences in the motivator factors for both tick of respondents but there service employees be higher in hygiene. Both indu stries, however, see communication as an important factor in motive. However, they only experience high hygiene, but less motivator, which means that they ar not fully motivated. It has been suggested that the companies of the employees surveyed should invest on improving the motivator factors within the working surroundings and meliorate communication flows.CHAPTER 1THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUNDThis study examines the importance of communication on the performance and pauperization of employees. The target samples of the study are employees from service and manufacturing companies. This allows seeing the importance of governanceal communication in two distinct angles that is the difference between the views of service and manufacturing companies regarding the matter. Comparison of these views may lead to the development of new hypotheses or theories that may contribute to human resource forethought research. In this chapter, the nature of problem is presented and discus sed. The backgrounds of different variables cerebrate to the study were to a fault featured. Here, the aims, objectives, problem statements and significance of the study were also explained.BACKGROUND OF THE STUDYEmployeesEmployees basically grant-to doe with to people who work for other in return for wages or salary (Gillis, 2004). Legally, an employee is referred to a someone hired to provide services to a conjunction on a regular basis in exchange for compensation, and who does not provide these services as fork of an in playent business (Gillis, 2004). However, Gillis (2004) stated that employees are more than than any of those definitions. Employees are the lifeblood of the scheme because they are the ones who provide products and services that define corporations, organizations and government entities (Gillis, 2004). They are referred to as the most precious assets of the organization because with surface them, the organization is crippled and cannot function effectiv ely.Because of the important role of employees, organizations have the responsibility to motivate them so as they can function more effectively. Theories of motivation such as Maslows theory, Alfelders theory, McClellands theory, and Herzbergs theory (Mullins, 1999) explain wherefore employees should be motivated and why organizations should take this concept into consideration. But what really constitutes effective employee motivation? Several research and organizational reports dapple positive communication as one of the most important factors that build effective employee motivation. For instance, Riccomini (2005) cited a straddle of organizational research by General Electric and Hewlett-Packard in the eighties that concludes The better the managers communication, the more snug the employees were with all aspects of their work life. Building a positive communication with employees is important because they are the organizations best ambassadors or loudest critics, depending on how fast they get relevant education and the context in which it is go throughd (Howard, 1998).Information consistency affects the success of the ac caller and if it fails to happen information internally and externally, the reputation of the company may fall. Communication basically uplifts the morale of an employee as it makes them feel that they are valued by theorganization. This also builds employee loyalty and satisfaction. As G emeritusfarb (1990) stated Employers are becoming more aware that employee loyalty, commitment, and concern for quality depend on effective employee communication.CommunicationCommunication is not just important to an organization, but is an important instalment in e veryday human life. Gamble and Gamble (1999) stated Communication is the core of our humanness, and that how we communicate with each other shapes our lives and our world (p.4). Communicative skills help humans to reach out to one another or to confront events that challenge our f lexibility, integrity, expressiveness and critical thinking skills (Gamble and Gamble, 1999).Communication is rather complex to define in a single sentence. In a glimpse, however, it has many types which include interpersonal communication intrapersonal group communication public communication mass communication and online or machine-assisted communication (Gamble and Gamble, 1999). Interpersonal communication means to move with another person, while intrapersonal means to interact with oneself, or to reason with or evaluate self (Gamble and Gamble, 1999). conclave communication, on the other hand, is defined as the answer of interacting with a limited number of others, work to portion information, develop ideas, make decisions, solve problems, offer support, or have fun (Gamble and Gamble, 1999). Mass communication, is communicating to a large number of people using media (television, news newsprint, internet, radio), and finally, online or machine assisted communication deals w ith communicating through and through the use of online software that are programmed to interact with browsers or users (Gamble and Gamble, 1999).Communication is also categorized into two verbal and non-verbal. Verbal communication means the use of the spoken word when communicating, while non-verbal communication means using other medium such as body signals, writing etc. (Gamble and Gamble, 1999).Communication undergoes a process, which involves the information source, the transmitter, noise source, recipient role and destination. This is based on the communication theory (see figure 1) that was developed by Shannon and weaver (1949). The information source is the communicator of the information, which then uses a specific type of transmitter or medium (e.g. verbal, written, telephone, etc). The receiver receives the information, but the information can be affected by a specific noise source, which can be a distraction from anyone or anywhere. The receiver then interprets the m essage and finally puts the communicated message in its destination (Bryant and Heath, 2000).Figure 1 Shannon and Weaver Theory of CommunicationThe theory of communication evolved over the years, but the model of Shannon and Weaver (1949) is one of the firsts that explains the process of communication. Today, communication is world regarded as an important factor in business, and that the ability of the company to communicate can descend its success.Business CommunicationCommunication is important in business because a business environment is a place where many interactions are needed, and much information should be acquired (Eckhaus, 1999). It always involves openly competitive activity, in which working professionals debate issues, defend positions, and evaluate the arguments of others (Eckhaus, 1999). just about working professionals, particularly those in middle and upper management, routinely produce a variety of messages, many of which are in the written form of memoranda, electronic mail, letters, reports, performance reviews, instructions, procedures, and proposals (Eckhaus, 1999). It is also argued that a fuller discretion of organizations is a vital ingredient at every forward step of the career process, and that communication is a primary element for understanding how organizations function and how members of the organization should, even must, behave in organizations if they are to throw away their careers (Harris, 1993).The practice of effective communication within the organization is also linked with the development of a bouncing corporate culture, job satisfaction of employees, and the happiness and productivity of employees (Harris, 1993). Communication skills are also important to organization leaders because it helps them manage the company more effectively (Harris, 1993).Companies recognize the importance of communication that is why it is a barometer in hiring or measuring employee performance. Waner (1995) found that companies want t heir employees to maintain confidentiality, write persuasively, write routine letters, use proper placement and format, compose at the keyboard, and write special types of letters. Furthermore, interpersonal and oral skills were rated as very important. Also, basic English as well as abilities dealing with ethics, morals, values, and sensitivity were rated either important or very important (Waner, 1995).Although there were proven studies that communication promotes positive improvement in organizations, specifically motivation and performance improvements of employees, studies often fail to compare the level of importance of communication in terms of house industry types. Firms of today can either belong to the manufacturing or service industry. Each industry has different traits and characteristic from the other. Service industries sell and produce intangible services, while manufacturing companies sell tangible manufactured products. The management of the service firm is basical ly different the manufacturing firm because they have different organizational structures, services and products being provided, and working systems.STATEMENT OF THE ISSUE AND RESEARCH OBJECTIVESWhile many organizations believe that positive employee communication promotes employee motivation, this intuitive feeling can still be considered as a complex issue because of the changing nature oforganizations and the differences of their structure. For instance, the old employee communication paradigm relied on top-down approaches to reach their employees (Edelman, 2004). Today, this has already been replaced by new communication paradigms where employees criticise sources both inside and outside their organization for information (Edelman, 2004). Employees are now basically treated as consumers. The Workplace Communication Consultancy (2005) even reported that statistics show 90% of those who are kept fully advised are motivated to deliver added value while those who are kept in the d ark nearly 80% are not. However, such results are not industry specific. Industries vary in terms of culture for instance, service versus manufacturing industry. Thus, this study testament confirm the effects of positive communication on employee motivation in two specific industries service and manufacturing. The following are the research objectives of the study 1. To confirm the authority of positive communication on employee motivation. 2. To determine the effects of positive communication on employee motivation in service companies. 3. To determine the effects of positive communication on employee motivation in manufacturing companies. 4. To find out if the relationship between positive communication and employee motivation depends on which industry the organization is into.Needless to say, two groups of companies go away be surveyed in this study from the service industry and from the manufacturing industry. The results from the two groups will be compared and evaluated t o determine if the relationship between positive communication and employee motivation depends on a specific type of industry.theoryThe study aims to test the hypothesis that managers in manufacturing companies give importance to motivation but their employees are less motivated compared with service companies. The reason why that hypothesis is developed is because of thedifference between service and manufacturing company operations and process. For instance, since the service companies already dominated the market and most of their employees have higher salaries compared to manufacturing workers, there are great differences in terms of motivational factors.SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDYThe study is square to both service and manufacturing companies because it offers insights on which industry gives higher importance to communication. Through this study, the importance of communication in organization is once again emphasized. However, the comparison between the two business industries gives new insights and may develop new hypotheses for rising studies. This study may help develop theories for service and manufacturing companies on how communication can be apply as a tool to motivate employees to improve their performance or work. This study is also significant to communication and business students. For communication students, this study may benefit them because it may serve as a reference when it comes to communication theories or the role of communication in business. On the other hand, for business students, this paper may also serve them as a useful academic reference tool. Through this study, they will realize early the importance of communication and how this can help them become motivated or more active at work.THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKBecause the aim of this study is to determine a possible motivational factor for employees (which is specifically communication), the theoretical frameworks that have been chosen for this study are motivational theories a con tent motivation theory and a process motivation theory. Theories of motivation can be divide into two the content theories and the process theories (Mullins, 1999). Content theories emphasize the factors that motivate individuals. Examples of content theories are Maslows theory, Alfelders theory, McClellands theory, and Herzbergs theory (Mullins, 1999). On the other hand, the emphasis on process theories is on the veridicalprocess of motivation. Some examples of process theories are Expectancy theories, equity theory, goal theory, and social learning theory (Mullins, 1999). The content motivation theory that has been chosen as one of the frameworks for this study is Herzbergs Two-Factor Theory or Motivator-Hygiene Theory. This theory basically extended Maslows hierarchy of need theory and is more directly relevant to the work situation (Steers, 1983 Kreitner and Kinicki, 1998). Herzbergs research suggested that motivation is composed of two largely unrelated dimensions job-related factors which can prevent dissatisfaction, but do not promote employees growth and development (hygiene) and job-related factors that encourage growth (motivators) (Steers, 1983 Kreitner and Kinicki, 1998). Herzbergs theory is the first of its kind to emphasize the importance of non-monetary rewards in motivating employees (Gevity Institute, 2005). According to this theory, satisfying experiences are most often associated with the non-monetary, or intrinsic, content of the work. This includes variables such as achievement, recognition, personal growth, personal responsibility and the characteristics of the work (Gevity Institute, 2005).These factors are called motivators. When people are pleasant, they attribute their satisfaction to the work itself and not on the environment in which they work (Manisera et al, 2005). On the other hand, dissatisfying experiences result from the extrinsic work environment (Gevity Institute, 2005). These factors include company policies, salary, fel low worker relations, supervisor relationships, status, supervision, personal life and job security (Herzberg, 1966 Gevity Institute, 2005). Extrinsic factors cause a person who feels indifferent about the job to feel dissatisfied and less motivated (Herzberg, 1966 Gevity Institute, 2005). The theory explains that workers basically attribute their dissatisfaction to the environment in which they work, or conditions that surround the doings of the job (Herzberg, 1966 Gevity Institute, 2005).This is also known as the Hygiene factor (Herzberg, 1966). This should be continually maintained because employees never completely satisfied (Manisera et al, 2005). Manisera et al (2005) noted that when the hygiene factors are very low, workers are dissatisfied. However, when hygiene factors are met, workers are not dissatisfied but it does not of necessity mean that they are satisfied or motivated to work. The same goes for the motivator factors. When motivatorsare met, workers are satisfied l eading to higher performance. However, when motivators are not met, workers are not satisfied but it does not necessarily mean they are dissatisfied with their work. For this study, the following are the motivators and hygiene that affects the employeesHygieneMotivator1.Supervisors participation level2.Supervisors directions/expectations.3.Supervisors communication approach to employees.4.Supervisors willingness to help employees on problems concerning work information or directions.5.Supervisors preferred medium when communicating with employees.6.The level of noise where communication takes place.7.How information about salaries or company policies are communicated to employees.1.The employee receives appraisals or compliments when a job is well done.2.The employee is being given awards for performance and this is broadcasted or made known throughout the company.3.The responsibility of the employee is well-communicated or well-explained in terms of its contribution to the company .4.Improvements are well-communicated to employees.5.Employees receive briefing or information regarding changes in management or company policies.6.Employees feel they are part of the company.7.Employee mistake are corrected through strategic communication by the supervisor. On the other hand, the process motivation theory adopted for this study is the goal theory of motivation. In the late 1960s, Edwin Locke proposed that intentions to work toward a goal are a major source of work motivation (Locke and Latham, 1990). That means the goal will tell the people what needs to be done and how much effort will need to be put in order to fulfill the goal and target of the organization (Locke and Latham, 1990). The key steps in applying goal aspect are (1) diagnosis for readiness (2) preparing employees via increased interpersonal interaction, communication, training, and action plans for goal setting (3) emphasizing the attributes of goals that should be understood by a manager and subordi nates (4) conducting intermediate reviews to make necessary adjustments in established goals and (5) performing a final review to check the goals set, modified, and accomplished (Matteson, 1999).
